Twenty-one victims of the tragic stampede at a Christmas rice distribution event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, were buried on Friday amid tears and sorrowful reflections.
The deceased, mostly women and children, were honoured during an inter-denominational service held at St. Mary’s Field, Okija. The burial ceremony was organized by the Obijackson Foundation in collaboration with the Okija royal palace.
The somber event was attended by families of the victims, survivors, community members, and dignitaries who gathered to pay their last respects.
Rev. Donald Chukwudolue, who led the sermon based on Revelation 21:1-8, offered prayers for the bereaved families, urging them to find solace in God.
“We ask God to wipe away every tear and console the families of the deceased. We pray such an accident will not occur in Okija again. Okija mourns, Anambra mourns, and Nigeria mourns,” he said.
Chukwudolue also highlighted the need for collective unity in overcoming the tragedy. “Only the Lord can console those who lost their loved ones. We pray the Lord will continue to comfort them,” he added.
The founder of the Obijackson Foundation, Ernest Azudialu Obiejesi, expressed profound sorrow over the incident, pledging to prevent a recurrence.
“Today, we gather here with heavy hearts to honour the memory of those we lost in the tragedy. I sincerely express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Okija community,” Azudialu said.
He reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to its philanthropic mission, emphasizing its dedication to making Okija a safer and more united community.
“This tragedy strengthens our resolve to continue our humanitarian work. Together, we will rebuild and ensure Okija never suffers such a calamity again,” he noted.
Reflecting on the foundation’s 15 years of service, Azudialu assured continuous support for the affected families and the broader community.
“We are reminded of the importance of doing good. Our resolve to serve the Okija people remains steadfast. We will continue to bring succour and love to Okija,” he pledged.
The tragedy, which claimed 21 lives, occurred on December 21, 2024, during the distribution of palliatives organized by the Obijackson Foundation. The foundation was established by Ernest Azudialu Obiejesi, a prominent figure in the community, as part of its commitment to improving the welfare of Okija residents.
