The Presidency has confirmed that President Bola Tinubu remains actively engaged in the governance of Nigeria, despite being abroad for nearly two weeks. According to a statement released on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President is expected to return to Abuja on Monday, April 21, after the Easter holidays.
Onanuga stated that Tinubu, who travelled from Paris to London over the weekend, has been in “constant communication with key government officials” and continues to direct national affairs. He added that the President has issued specific directives to security chiefs to tackle emerging threats in parts of the country.
The statement, titled “Statement On President Tinubu’s Return To Nigeria,” described the President’s absence as “temporary” and consistent with a previously communicated two-week timeframe.
“The President’s commitment to his duties remains unwavering, and his administration continues to function effectively under his leadership,” Onanuga said, assuring the public that governance is proceeding without interruption.
Although the statement did not disclose the purpose of Tinubu’s travels to Paris and London, it aligns with previous patterns of working visits since he assumed office nearly two years ago.
Thursday’s clarification appears to be a response to mounting criticism from opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who questioned the President’s continued stay abroad amid worsening insecurity in states such as Plateau and Benue.
