Kwara’s 70-Metre Flagpole Signals New Era of Progress, Cultural Reawakening

19 May, 2025

Kwara State has taken a bold step to reposition itself on the map of innovation and tourism in West Africa with the unveiling of a 70-metre flagpole — now the tallest in the region. The towering structure, located in Ilorin, stands not just as a monument, but as a symbol of the state’s ambition to shift from its traditional identity as a civil service hub to a thriving centre for tourism, technology, culture and enterprise.

Commissioner for Works, Engr. Abdulquawiy A. Olododo, described the project as “a physical and philosophical statement of Kwara’s direction,” noting that the flagpole reflects the government’s commitment to economic diversification and social unity.

“This is more than just a flag,” Olododo said. “It is a mirror of who we are — a people rooted in culture, yet forward-looking in innovation and growth. It is our message to the world that Kwara is open for tourism, investment, and creativity.”

Standing tall against the skyline, the flagpole serves as a cultural beacon, celebrating Kwara’s ethnic diversity and shared values. The flag flying at its peak is seen as a representation of unity and progress, projecting an image of a state ready to embrace its role as a hub for modern development while honouring its traditions.

Observers say the landmark will not only become a major tourist attraction, but also a catalyst for economic growth. With ongoing investments in an innovation hub, international conference centre, film factory, and visual arts centre, the flagpole fits into a broader plan to reposition the state as a creative and commercial powerhouse.

“This is part of the urban renewal efforts and a new narrative for Kwara,” the commissioner added. “We are building not just infrastructure, but an identity — one that merges heritage with opportunity.”

Residents and visitors alike have hailed the initiative as a breath of fresh air, symbolising hope and new possibilities for the people of Kwara State.

With the flagpole now rising above the city, Kwara is sending a clear message: the state is not just reaching for the sky — it is charting a new course, rooted in unity, innovation, and inclusive development.
