The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed deep sorrow over the destruction caused by a devastating flood in Mokwa town, Niger State, which has claimed lives and left several families displaced.
Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that the scale of destruction is a grim reminder of the rising impact of climate change on communities across Nigeria.
“We are shocked by the magnitude of the flooding, which has resulted in the loss of lives and properties in the community,” AbdulRazaq stated in a message of condolence on behalf of the governors.
The NGF expressed its sympathy to the victims and their families, pledging full support to the Niger State Government as it coordinates emergency relief efforts in the affected areas.
“We commend the interventions of the Niger State Government and its coordination with emergency responders to support the victims of this disaster,” the NGF Chairman said.
Governor AbdulRazaq further noted that the incident should serve as a wake-up call to strengthen proactive measures against environmental disasters. “This flood again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and the accompanying effects on how we live,” he said.
He reaffirmed the governors’ commitment to working with the Office of the National Security Adviser and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to support affected communities and build stronger disaster response systems.
“As leaders, we are committed to strengthening mitigative actions and relief institutions to help our people cope with this global challenge,” he said.
The NGF urged citizens to support government-led climate resilience initiatives and to cooperate with relevant agencies providing urgent assistance.
The Forum concluded with prayers for the families who lost loved ones and livelihoods, encouraging unity and compassion as recovery efforts continue in Mokwa.
