The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into allegations that some of its personnel were extorting farmers and motorists at checkpoints in Baruten and Kaiama local government areas of Kwara State.
The 22 Armoured Brigade, based at Sobi Cantonment in Ilorin, made this known in a statement issued on Friday, following a report by Sahara Reporters on April 22, 2025.
Lieutenant Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the brigade, explained that the Army had taken the allegations seriously and would not condone any act that tarnishes its image.
“The Nigerian Army respects the rights of citizens to express opinions, especially on social media,” Nwankwo said. “However, these platforms must not be used to spread deliberate falsehoods.”
He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to maintaining professionalism and discipline, saying that the military institution remains guided by principles of justice and accountability.
“As a self-regulating institution, the Army has a zero-tolerance policy for indiscipline,” he stated. “We will not hesitate to take appropriate administrative actions against any personnel found wanting.”
Nwankwo assured Nigerians that the investigation would be thorough, transparent and impartial, stressing that the Army’s integrity and credibility must be upheld at all times.
“The Nigerian Army will continue to defend the nation’s territorial integrity while ensuring that the fundamental human rights of all citizens are respected,” he added.
The Army urged the public to await the outcome of the investigation as it works to maintain trust and professionalism in its operations.
