A former presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has urged Christian youths in Nigeria to uphold integrity and righteousness as a foundation for leadership.

Speaking in Ilorin during a one-day political education training organised by the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Kwara State chapter, Olawepo-Hashim said integrity is key to building public trust and becoming a respected leader.

“To become a good leader, your integrity matters most. Protect your integrity and be righteous. Don’t compromise and always maintain a good name that will last for eternity,” he told the audience.

He advised the youths to take lessons from Nigeria’s founding leaders like Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and Solomon Lar, who led with clear vision and values. Olawepo-Hashim also urged them to emulate the biblical Daniel, who served in government without compromising his faith.

“They always came to Daniel because he had wisdom. If you have the wisdom, they will come for you and tap from your knowledge,” he said.

Former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yissa Benjamin, encouraged Christian youths not to shy away from politics but to rise and take responsibility.

He stressed that Christians should be peacemakers and positive influencers in society.

“As Christians, you are called to be the light and salt of the nation. You must influence your space positively by being truthful and honest in all your doings,” Benjamin said.

He also charged them to pray for leaders, show compassion to the needy, and promote peace and justice wherever they find themselves.

Kwara State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, speaking at the event, urged women in politics to respect their homes while in public service.

She also praised men who support their wives’ political ambitions, describing them as worthy of honour.

“Being in politics or public office is not easy. It comes with trials and persecution. But with trust in God and commitment to serve with integrity, one will succeed,” she added.

YOWICAN Chairman in Kwara, Evangelist Stephen Adeola-Awoyale, said the training was designed to awaken Christian youths to the urgent need for political participation.

“It is time for Christian youths to take action. We can no longer sit back and be indifferent to politics. We must rise to lead,” he said.

He also appealed to church leaders to support and encourage youths to become active players in the political space.
