Admin,
Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has officially resigned as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing health concerns that have limited his capacity to continue in the role.
The resignation, which was quietly submitted on Thursday night, June 26, 2025, was handed to the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru. Ganduje’s exit comes nearly two years after he took over the chairmanship in August 2023, following the abrupt resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
According to a senior party official who spoke under anonymity, Ganduje’s health condition has worsened in recent months.
“The chairman has been battling serious health issues for a while now. It reached a stage where he just couldn’t cope with the rigours of the job anymore,” the source said.
While his leadership tenure was marked by efforts to consolidate the party ahead of the next general election, Ganduje’s reign was also riddled with allegations of internal rifts and mismanagement—challenges that may have added to the strain on his health.
In the interim, the party has handed over leadership to Senator Basiru, a former Senate spokesperson known for his experience in legal and political circles. However, party insiders suggest this is only a stopgap measure.
There are already speculations about a permanent successor, with former Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, reportedly being considered among other contenders. An emergency National Working Committee (NWC) meeting is expected to be convened in the coming days to chart the way forward.
The APC now faces the dual task of managing a smooth leadership transition and uniting its ranks ahead of upcoming bye-elections across 12 states.
As one party insider put it, “This is a critical moment. Whoever takes over must be someone that can rally the party and stabilize the house.”
