Kwara State on Monday officially hoisted its towering 70-metre Unity Flagpole, a structure Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq described as a bold symbol of national pride, unity, and the collective aspirations of Nigerians.

Speaking during a brief ceremony in Ilorin, the Governor—represented by the Commissioner for Communications, Bola Olukoju—said the flagpole signifies more than just a raised banner. It stands as a testament to the state’s growing identity as a hub of innovation, culture, and visionary leadership.

Olukoju was joined by Commissioners Aliyu Kora Sabi (Transport), Nafisat Buge (Environment), and Nnafatima Imam (Social Development), among other top government officials, security chiefs, and hundreds of residents from across the metropolis.

“Just like the Innovation Hub, Visual Arts Centre, and Garment Factory, this flagpole is a regional marvel—yet another testament to the transformation taking place across Kwara,” the Governor said, referencing the flagpole’s distinction as the tallest in British West Africa.

“It asserts our place on the global stage and reinforces Kwara’s growing reputation as a centre of innovation, culture, and purposeful leadership,” he added.

Governor AbdulRazaq said the Unity Flagpole is envisioned to become a major landmark and tourist attraction—one that will create opportunities and showcase Kwara’s strategic investment in infrastructure that not only serves the people but also inspires them.

He highlighted his administration’s strides in various sectors, including road construction, healthcare upgrades, improved water access, and targeted support for farmers, traders, and vulnerable populations through social protection programmes.

“But development is not only about the tangible. It is also about spirit—about building monuments and spaces that lift our hearts, celebrate our heritage, and remind us of who we are and where we are headed,” he said. “This flagpole belongs in that special category. It aligns with our broader vision of a Kwara that is not only functional, but also beautiful, inspiring, and globally visible.”
