Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described the passing of Dr. Doyin Okupe as a personal loss, praising his lifelong dedication to Nigeria’s democracy and political development.
Dr. Okupe, a seasoned politician, strategist, and medical doctor, died at the age of 72, shortly after the passing of the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, Oba Adeleke Idowu-Basibo.
Reacting to the news, Governor Abiodun expressed his grief, acknowledging Okupe’s unwavering commitment to public service.
“Receiving the news of the passing of my elder brother, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has left me with a profound sense of personal loss, especially coming so soon after the transition of the Alaperu of Iperu Remo,” he said.
He described Okupe as a principled and affable figure who played a significant role in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, despite facing persecution under military rule.
“Beyond his political and professional engagements, Dr. Okupe was an easy-going and principled individual who never flaunted his credentials but stood firm in his convictions,” Abiodun stated.
Dr. Okupe’s political journey saw him align with different parties, including the National Republican Convention (NRC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Accord Party, and the Labour Party. However, Abiodun noted that despite these shifts, Okupe maintained lasting friendships across political divides.
“Even after the 2023 elections, he openly admired and aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s progressive vision,” he added.
Okupe, who co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre, held several high-profile positions, including National Publicity Secretary of the NRC, Special Assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, and media strategist for Senator Bukola Saraki and Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Governor Abiodun highlighted Okupe’s humility and civility in political discourse, noting his ability to engage in debates without hostility.
“Okupe was one of those rare politicians who could disagree without being disagreeable. He never used foul language and was quick to acknowledge his mistakes,” the governor remarked.
Despite being a trained medical doctor, Okupe carved a niche for himself in media and political communication. His passion for journalism led him to establish his own media outfit, further cementing his influence in Nigeria’s political space.
Reflecting on his final years, Governor Abiodun commended Okupe’s resilience, stating that even in the face of health challenges, he remained vocal about national issues.
“Even as he faced health struggles, Okupe never stopped championing the cause of national development. His voice will be deeply missed,” he said.
The governor prayed for Okupe’s family, wishing them the strength to bear the loss, while acknowledging his legacy as a patriot, statesman, and media strategist whose contributions will not be forgotten.
