The Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences, Oke-Ode, has made history with the matriculation of its first-ever set of National Diploma (ND) Nursing students, a move hailed as a major step forward in the state’s healthcare and educational advancement.
Held at the college campus in Ifelodun Local Government Area, the event attracted government officials, academic leaders, parents and community stakeholders, all gathered to celebrate what many described as a new dawn in professional nursing education in Kwara State.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, commended the institution’s leadership for bringing the ND Nursing programme to life, applauding Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for prioritising healthcare and education in his administration.
“Governor AbdulRazaq has consistently shown that quality healthcare is not just about infrastructure but also about competent personnel. His vision continues to drive reforms in both sectors,” she said.

Addressing the students, she reminded them of the weight of their new responsibility. “Nursing is a calling. The pledge you take today is not just ceremonial—it binds you to a life of integrity, compassion, and professionalism. Remember that people’s lives will one day depend on your decisions,” she added.

The Provost of the College, Alhaji Quadri L.O., expressed his pride in the milestone, describing the event as a long-awaited achievement. He noted that the college’s ND and HND programmes are fully accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
He praised the governor for making the feat possible, saying, “Governor AbdulRazaq is a silent achiever. His support was instrumental in securing the necessary approvals and upgrading our facilities.”
In a speech on behalf of the students, Coordinator Muhammad Aishat Talatu urged her colleagues to stay focused and determined, adding that they must embrace Capacity, Conformity, and Commitment as guiding principles in their academic journey.
A high point of the ceremony was the capping and stripping of students, symbolising their formal induction into the nursing profession. Guests also toured the college facilities and were treated to a drama performance by the students.
Professor Joel Afolayan of the University of Ilorin delivered the keynote lecture on “The Future of Nursing: Emerging Roles and Specialisation,” encouraging students to embrace innovation and professional growth.
The event not only marked a significant achievement for the institution but also reinforced the state government’s vision of equipping Kwara with skilled healthcare professionals ready to serve and save lives.
