A Professor of Islamic History at Kwara State University (KWASU), Professor Sulaiman Sheu Adua, has called for the re-training of Islamic scholars in mediation and conflict resolution to help curb sectarian and communal clashes in Nigeria and across West Africa.

Professor Adua made the call while delivering the 18th Inaugural Lecture of the university on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The lecture was titled “The Role of Contemporary Nigerian Islamic Scholars in West Africa.”

He stressed that equipping Islamic clerics with skills in peacebuilding and mediation is essential to promoting harmony in increasingly divided societies. According to him, religious leaders are not only spiritual guides but also agents of social change, capable of fostering dialogue, resolving disputes, and guiding youth away from radical ideologies.

The professor also underscored the importance of involving government institutions and non-governmental organisations in youth development efforts, stating that religious scholars can play a central role in mentoring the younger generation.

Commending the contributions of Nigerian Islamic scholars in the diaspora, Professor Adua noted that their commitment to interfaith harmony, community service, and humanitarian efforts has had a positive impact on their host societies.

He further recommended stronger collaborations between governments, faith leaders, and development organisations in West Africa, aimed at addressing common challenges and building sustainable peace across the sub-region.
