The Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) recently start a decongestion exercise, and a shocking discovery was made near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, an area popularly known as “Lucifer Village.”
This village is clearly visible within its location. There are houses, brothels, eatery, bars, restaurant and variety stores within the village, all built over large drains and gutter.
An Environmental Health Officer Joseph Asitanga, who led the operation on behalf of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), described the location as a public health and safety nightmare.
Asitanga, in an interview with the press, revealed that these structures were not authorized and also posed a serious risk to both residents and visitors.
Preliminary survey conducted, shows that significant number of people operating at this village are foreign nationals that includes a good number of Nigerians and Togolese, many of who may not possess the permit to operate a business in Ghana.
Lucifer Village, according to Asitanga, has become a territory for criminal activities and immoral acts.
Lucifer village may be pulled down any time soon, as AMA has served notice to the occupants and business owners within the village to leave the environment. This is a repeat exercise.
AMA is making serious effort to reclaim public spaces, prevent unlawful occupation of critical infrastructures and pledging a cleaner city.
