The Police Service Commission has appointed Monday Agbonika, formerly of the Police Mounted Troop, as the new Commissioner of Police for Edo State, succeeding CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin.

This appointment was confirmed in a statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, which was made available to journalists.

During his posting interview at the Police Service Commission, Agbonika was welcomed by the Commission’s Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), along with Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, retired Supreme Court Justice, and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission. They collectively urged Agbonika to quickly establish himself in his new role and address the state’s rising crime rates, including the recent killings that have sparked public concern.

The Commission stressed the importance of proactivity, urging Agbonika to work closely with relevant stakeholders and maintain transparency by documenting every action and incident. They emphasized that the handling of suspects linked to the recent killings would be pivotal in determining his success. “Your success will depend on how you handle the cases and how you win the trust of the people,” said the Commission’s leadership.

Agbonika was also advised to ensure that the necessary Police Departments for Tactical Units are fully engaged, avoiding any form of sidelining. He assured the Commission that he would uphold the law in his duties and rely on the guidance of the Inspector General of Police.

With over 32 years of experience in various roles, Agbonika’s career spans operations, investigations, police administration, and public information. Before his appointment, he served as the Commissioner of Police for the Mounted Troop at Force Headquarters. His previous postings included Commissioner of Police for Communications (Operations), Deputy Commissioner for Interpol at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, and Area Commander at various locations including Lagos and Ogun States.

The new Commissioner has promised to work diligently to restore peace and security in Edo State, ensuring the community’s trust in the police force.
