Nigerian Humanitarian Ameen Abdul Demands Global Action to Stop Attacks on Aid Workers

17th May, 2025

Renowned Nigerian humanitarian and governance expert, Ameen Abdul, has decried the rising attacks on aid workers across the world, describing them as gross violations of international laws and a threat to humanity.

Abdul, a member of the Africa Governance Group of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), made the call during the celebration of World Red Cross Day and the 63rd anniversary of the Tanzanian Red Cross Society in Dodoma.

Addressing a high-level gathering that included Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, alongside humanitarian leaders and volunteers, Abdul warned that continued assaults on aid workers jeopardize life-saving missions in conflict zones.

“Attacks on humanitarian service providers are unacceptable,” he said. “We demand that all actors respect international humanitarian laws, cease these attacks, and ensure the safety and security of humanitarian workers who risk their lives daily to serve humanity.”

While reflecting on the theme of the event, “On the Side of Humanity,” Abdul reiterated the founding principles of the Red Cross—humanity, neutrality, impartiality and voluntary service—urging governments and communities to uphold these values.

“We honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Their memory continues to inspire us to serve with courage and conviction,” he stated, paying tribute to aid workers who lost their lives in service.

Abdul also highlighted the ongoing partnership between the Nigerian and Tanzanian Red Cross Societies, pointing out that collaboration across borders strengthens emergency response and helps build resilient communities.

He commended the leadership of the Tanzanian Red Cross, including Hon. David Mwakiposa Kihenzile and Madam Lucia Pande, for their commitment to humanitarian service, and expressed gratitude to the people of Dodoma for their hospitality.

As humanitarian crises increase globally, Abdul’s message reinforces calls for urgent measures to ensure aid workers can operate without fear.

“By being on the side of humanity, we strengthen our collective humanity,” he added.
