Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has assured families of the victims of the recent Uromi killings that justice will be served, as he paid a condolence visit to them in Edo State. The victims, some of whom hailed from Bankure Local Government Area of Kano State, were brutally attacked while returning from Port Harcourt.

Governor Okpebholo, visibly moved by the tragic incident, expressed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that those responsible face the full wrath of the law.

“I was deeply troubled when I received the news in the middle of the night. By 4 a.m., I left Abuja and came straight to Uromi to meet with the grieving families. During my campaign, your people stood by me, and I will not abandon you in this painful moment. I extend my condolences to the people of Kano State and pray for the eternal rest of the victims,” he said.

The governor revealed that security agencies have made significant progress in their investigation, with 14 suspects already in custody. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is very concerned about this incident and has directed security agencies to go after the perpetrators. After the holiday, the suspects will be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation, and more arrests will follow,” he assured.

Kano State Governor commended Okpebholo’s swift intervention and solidarity, emphasizing that his visit had reassured the people of Kano.

“We appreciate Governor Okpebholo for his quick response. He personally ensured that the corpses were retrieved and given a proper burial. He also pledged support to the affected families, and I can confirm that he has fulfilled those promises. Justice is our priority, and we trust his commitment to ensuring the culprits are brought to book,” he said.

The Arewa community in Edo State also lauded the government’s prompt action, stressing that the tragic event should not create division.

“I was born and raised in Edo, and we have always enjoyed peace with the people here. This incident must not be used to tarnish the state’s image. The swift response of the Edo government and the bravery of Uromi residents, who rescued some victims, show that this state values unity,” said Badamasi Sally, a northern community leader in Edo.

Similarly, Fred Akhigbe, who leads the Edo community in Kano, urged citizens from both states to maintain peace and unity.

“We thank Governor Okpebholo for coming to Kano personally to extend his condolences. This tragedy initially created tension, but the swift actions of both state governments have helped calm the situation. I have lived in Kano for 52 years, and we must remember that we are all one people. Let’s not allow this incident to create division,” he urged.

Governor Okpebholo’s visit reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice and national unity. The Edo State Government assured that security agencies would continue their efforts to track down all those involved in the killings.
