Oyo NOA, NCC Partner to Protect Telecom Infrastructure

The Oyo State National Orientation Agency (NOA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the National Communications Commission (NCC) to protect telecom infrastructure in the state. This collaboration aims to address the issue of vandalism, which has significant economic costs and social consequences.

The Partnership
During a meeting between the NCC management team, led by Dr. Olubunmi Banjoko, and the Oyo State NOA Director, Dr. Olukemi Afolayan, the two agencies discussed ways to sensitize the public on the importance of protecting telecom infrastructure. The NCC has proposed leveraging NOA’s extensive reach and public trust to raise awareness at the grassroots level ¹.

The Issue of Vandalism
Vandalism of telecom infrastructure has severe consequences, including:

Interruption in network service: Disrupt communication and affect businesses and individuals.

  • Traffic congestion: Causing gridlocks and accidents.
    Productivity loss: Impacting economic growth and development.
    Breakdown in communication: Affecting emergency response systems.

Joint Efforts
To combat vandalism, will involve the joint efforts of NCC and NOA. NOA will:
Sensitize the public: Through grassroots campaigns and advocacy programs.
Improve reporting channels: Establishing a WhatsApp line, Instagram page, and dedicated shortcodes for reporting suspicious activity.
Collaborate with security agencies: Working together to apprehend and prosecute vandals.

“The NOA has large mandates that cover all government agencies, and we will use our platforms to sensitize lawbreakers to desist from attacking critical government infrastructure,” said Dr. Olukemi Afolayan, Director, Oyo State NOA.

“The security and protection of Telecommunication Infrastructure is a priority for the Nigerian Communications Commission, and we will work with all stakeholders to ensure the protection of telecom infrastructure,” noted the Zonal Controller.
