The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the temporary shutdown of the Port Harcourt Refining Company for a one-month maintenance and sustainability assessment, beginning May 24, 2025.
This development was made public by the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, in a statement released on Saturday. He explained that the shutdown is a planned and routine process aimed at ensuring long-term operational efficiency and environmental compliance.
“The Port Harcourt Refinery will be undergoing a scheduled maintenance and sustainability review starting from May 24,” Soneye said, stressing that the move is in line with industry best practices and part of NNPCL’s broader commitment to energy security.
Soneye further noted that the company is collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, to ensure the process is executed with maximum transparency and efficiency.
“We are working closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the maintenance activities are done efficiently and transparently,” he said. “NNPC Ltd remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering sustainable energy security for Nigeria.”
He assured Nigerians that further updates would be provided through the company’s official channels. The Port Harcourt refinery, once fully operational, is expected to play a vital role in reducing the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products.
