The Nigerian Senate has summoned the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, along with the Director-Generals of the Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), to provide a closed-door briefing on allegations that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is sponsoring Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria.
The move follows a recent claim made by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry, who alleged that USAID had been funding activities of the terrorist group. While the U.S. Congress is already investigating the accusation, the Nigerian Senate resolved to conduct its own inquiry during plenary on Wednesday.
The Senate’s decision came after a motion raised by Senator Ali Ndume, co-sponsored by five other senators, highlighting the seriousness of the allegation. After debating the motion, the Senate agreed to summon the security chiefs for a private session on a date to be communicated to them.
