A potential tragedy was averted in Ilorin on Friday evening, June 6, 2025, when men of the Kwara State Fire Service swiftly responded to a petrol tanker spill at the Iyemoja axis along the Jebba Expressway near Okoolowo.

The incident, which occurred around 4:30pm, involved a petrol-laden tanker with registration number RSH 183 XB. Despite the high risk of explosion, there was no fire outbreak, thanks to the prompt intervention of the fire service.

According to a statement issued by the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, firefighters immediately drenched the tanker and its surroundings to neutralise the risk of ignition. The team remained at the scene while the fuel was safely transferred to another tanker.

The Director of the Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, praised the professionalism and urgency displayed by his officers, describing their action as a clear example of preparedness and commitment to public safety.

“We thank God there was no fire. Our men acted swiftly and effectively, preventing what could have been a major disaster. I urge all motorists, especially those transporting inflammable products, to always take necessary precautions and drive responsibly,” he said.

Residents and commuters along the route expressed relief and commended the fire service for their timely intervention, which ensured the safety of lives and property.
